The Livingroom in Rotterdam-West is not a traditional concert hall. High ceilings, a lot of glass, an open floor plan. On 29 March there was a band, 70 people who had just run a 5K, and we took care of the sound.
The event
OMWDAY.03 was the third edition of a day that combines movement, community and culture. The programme: a 5K run-walk through the neighbourhood, a community dinner and then an intimate concert by Levi Silvanie and his band. The concept sits close to an NPR Tiny Desk session: the artist right up against the audience, no big gaps to the stage, no excessive volume. But with a full live band setup and a recording you can use afterwards.
The challenge
Glass and hard walls bounce sound back. With a get-in window of under three hours that means turning up well prepared, positioning cleverly and tuning fast. We wanted a sound that fills the room without taking it over. Clear for everyone in the hall, but comfortable enough to leave the mood intact.
What we supplied
We worked with a full band setup: microphones for every musician, active QSC speakers and an Allen & Heath SQ6 digital mixing desk as the heart of the production. Alongside the live reinforcement we made a multitrack recording of the whole concert, so Levi can have a proper mix made afterwards for promo material or a live release.
For the lighting we set up two focused LED profile spots on the stage. Tight, without disturbing the intimate feel of the evening.
Two technicians rigged everything in under two hours. During the show one engineer stayed at the desk. Afterwards the whole setup was struck and out of the door before 22:00.
The result
The concert sounded good. The band had room, the audience stood close around them and the acoustics of the hall worked with us instead of against us. Levi and his team trusted the setup, and that trust was justified.
